The Brazilian Center for Climate Justice (CBJC) is a national civil society organization dedicated to issues concerning the Black population within Brazil’s climate agenda. Our mission is to broaden public discourse and influence climate justice and racial equity policies at the local, regional, and national levels.
The climate emergency is a crisis that confronts structural inequalities. We understand that racism is a system of oppression in all its political and social dimensions. Therefore, discussing climate justice is, above all, confronting environmental racism.
Our main areas of action are:
To investigate and analyze the main challenges, achievements, and issues involving Black populations within the scope of climate justice, environmental racism, and climate change. The goal is to build diagnostics based on participatory methodologies, citizen data generation, and accessible language.
Training sessions and climate education initiatives aimed at qualifying and educating the Black population about the climate crisis. The goal is to provide knowledge to the Black community about issues and solutions across the five regions of Brazil. From formal (and informal) educational spaces to the territories, we work to promote active, anti-racist citizenship.
Engage in the field, lead and advocate for pressure actions, mobilization, or coordination to influence decision-making in the federal executive and judiciary through strategies, campaigns, and other forms of intervention.
The climate justice agenda is a priority cause, and our goal is to influence and racialize socio-environmental public policies for the Black population.
Communication is power! Through the construction and dissemination of sources, data, and information on climate justice with a racial perspective for Black populations, we aim to bring the issue to diverse audiences and media in a decolonial manner. To achieve this, we need to build narratives based on evidence and political advocacy.
Expand public debate and influence climate justice and racial equity policies at the local, regional, and national levels.
Accelerate climate solutions based on research, education, communication, and advocacy exclusively for the Black population in Brazil.
